What to have ready when you call
None of this is required, but a contractor can quote far more accurately — and far faster — when they have it. Two minutes of prep can be the difference between a real number on the phone and a vague range.
- The city and cross streets. Coverage is assigned by area, so this is the first thing that gets checked.
- Number of stories, including whether there is a walkout or a half-story dormer. Height drives labour cost more than anything else.
- Roughly how much gutter is on the house. Pacing the perimeter is close enough. A typical Michigan bungalow runs 110 to 160 feet; a two-storey colonial often runs 180 to 240.
- What is actually happening. Overflowing at one corner is a different job from a run that has pulled away from the fascia.
- How old the gutters are, if you know. Aluminum that is 25 years old and full of caulk repairs is usually past repair.
- Whether the house is in a designated historic district. That changes materials, approvals, and price on any exterior change.
