Why location changes the job

The same gutter spec does not work everywhere in Michigan

Gutter sizing is a drainage calculation, not a style choice. It depends on roof area, roof pitch, and the peak rainfall intensity a region actually sees — and Michigan varies enough across its width that a spec that works in Monroe is undersized in Muskegon.

Snow load is the clearest split. Detroit and the Downriver communities average roughly 42 inches of snow a season. Move west into the lake-effect belt — Grand Rapids, Holland, Muskegon — and the average runs 70 to 90 inches. That extra load is what tears gutters off fascia in February, and it is why hanger spacing tightens as you move west.

Housing stock is the second split. Detroit, Bay City, Kalamazoo, and Ypsilanti carry huge numbers of pre-1940 homes, many with original wood fascia and some with built-in box gutters framed into the cornice — a completely different repair than hanging a new K-style run.

Livonia, Warren, Westland, and Roseville are dominated by 1950s and 60s ranches, most still on the 5-inch gutter and 2x3 downspouts they were built with. Troy, Novi, and Rochester Hills are newer, larger, and taller, with complex roof valleys that dump enormous volume into short sections of trough.

Tree cover is the third. Silver and Norway maples drop seed in May that packs into a mat no downspout will pass. Oaks in Ann Arbor and Farmington Hills drop late and heavy into November. Pines in the northern service areas shed needles all year. Each pattern sets a different cleaning schedule.
